Statement on the Interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla

All 42 vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla have been intercepted by Israeli naval forces in international waters. The Marinette, the last boat sailing towards Gaza, was boarded this morning, completing Israel’s systematic dismantling of the largest humanitarian aid mission ever attempted to reach the besieged Palestinian enclave.

Approximately 500 civilians from more than 40 nations now sit in Israeli detention facilities. Among them are British citizens who committed no crime but sought to fulfil the humanitarian obligations that governments worldwide have abandoned.

British citizens currently detained include: Frances Jane Cumings, Sarah Louise Wilkinson, Husamettin Eyupoglu, Malcolm Geoffrey Ducker, Hussain Sijaad, Ewa Maria Jasiewicz, Aaron White, Bianca Milacic, Evie Rose Snedker, Kieran Isaac Fabien Andrieu, Saddaqat Khan, Benjamin Robert Bouquet, Hannah Sharpey-Shafer, and James Anthony Hickey.

Their detention, alongside prominent figures including Greta Thunberg, former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, and Member of European Parliament Rima Hassan, constitutes what the UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine has described as illegal abduction.

This mission was born out of desperation. When 2.3 million people face starvation and governments prove unwilling to challenge an illegal blockade, ordinary citizens felt compelled to act. Doctors, journalists, activists, and concerned individuals from across the globe risked detention to deliver food and medicine to Gazans. Their interception in international waters violates international law and exposes our collective moral failure.

The message sent is clear: Israel will use force to maintain its stranglehold on Gaza, and the international community will watch. European nations issue polite statements about respecting crew members’ rights, whilst their citizens remain detained.

The United Kingdom faces a moment of reckoning. British citizens are detained. British-flagged vessels were seized. The UK government recently took the right step of recognising Palestinian statehood, a decision Pickthall House welcomed as both principled and long overdue. That same moral clarity must now guide the government’s response to this crisis. Having recognised Palestine’s right to exist, the UK cannot remain passive whilst Palestinians are denied the most basic right to survival.

Pickthall House urgently calls on the UK government to:

• Demand the immediate and unconditional release of all British citizens detained whilst participating in this lawful humanitarian mission, and provide them with full consular support.
• Unequivocally condemn Israel’s interception of the entire flotilla as a violation of international law and collective punishment of Gaza’s civilian population.
• Support immediate international efforts to establish a permanent humanitarian corridor into Gaza, ensuring unrestricted access for aid organisations and ending the man-made famine.

The time for diplomatic equivocation has ended. As Colombia expels Israeli diplomats and cancels trade agreements in response to these violations, the UK must follow suit and move beyond hollow statements. The government demonstrated its ability to make principled decisions when it recognised Palestine. It must demonstrate that same resolve now.

Gaza’s people cannot wait. The flotilla has been stopped, but the crisis it sought to address continues to worsen by the hour. Pickthall House calls on the British government to fulfil its legal and moral obligations to protect British citizens, uphold international law, and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those who desperately need it.
